In comparison to humans, there are remarkably few sculptures depicting primates. Unlike the “human poses” familiar to us from cultural history, chimpanzees in these sculptures engage in a variety of activities that are natural and significant to humans but generally uncommon among animals: some play sports, some experience shame, some strive for intellectual enlightenment, and others contemplate existence.
