“Art arises from the confrontation of a questioning individual with a world that, in the face of reason, remains silent.”
Albert Camus
The frame depicted as a film set is a product of fantastical imagination, symbolizing our human pursuits, both impossible and possible, in the most incredible manner. The university buildings form a magical complex where a new reality is born daily, tested in the minds of the creative individuals within. It is a place where anything is possible.
Philosopher Alexius Meinong coined the term “non-existent objects” for things like round squares 20 years before Ludwig Wittgenstein. In the world of things that surround us, there is “no phenomenon that is simultaneously a mountain and made of gold and speaks.” Therefore, on the campus courtyard, the “non-existent object” materializes eerily.
Regardless of the medium of artistic thought, the transfer of poetic objects into human logical reality subtly raises playful questions that we deal with daily and are conscious of as an insurmountable gap between ourselves and the world. Ultimately, this is the source of the entire creative avant-garde, in the broadest sense, serving as a propelling force for humanity. This is how creativity and life itself find meaning.
About the process
The gold intended for entirely gilding the sculpture in the conceptual design was handed over to Tallinn University, which organizes gilding twice a year during graduation ceremonies. All graduates and new faculty members place a gold leaf on the hill with their own hands, and as a result, the mountain becomes fully gilded in approximately 60 years. Therefore, the installation sculpture is also transformative over time. “
The mountain speaks to you, and you have the opportunity to converse with the mountain when you find yourself in the right place and within the circle of projectors, metaphorically handed a symbolic microphone. In addition, it produces mystical subautomatic sounds triggered by movement. For this purpose, a sophisticated electronic analog sound and light solution was created, thanks to Magnus Andre.
